Imagine a Russian doll stacked up with her many ladies inside one another. This is how we see a person in yoga. Complex and layered. Right at the centre of this nest of dolls is the true Self.
In Yoga Philosophy these facets of ourselves are known as The Maya Koshas. One of the reasons yoga can be so affecting and effective is that it makes an effort to speak to the whole of the person.
It's less about doing a workout (although there may be challenging sequencing) and more about conditioning your physical body so that it can operate at its best whilst collaborating well with the other dimensions of you.
The first layer of the Koshas is Annamaya Kosha or 'The Food Sheath'. This represents our Body. Its translation from Sanskrit to English lays out the philosophy pretty clearly -You are what you eat.
We have teamed up with The Naturalista- Xochi Balfour to incorporate natural skincare into the day retreat. If the skin is the largest organ in the body, then perhaps it's important to think what its absorbing too. Xochi will guide us through making an almost edible -coconut, pink Himalayan salt and cardamom body scrub.
So you will go home having practiced 4 hours of yoga, eaten delicious food and with a handmade body scrub in hand ready for a Sunday evening bath. Bliss.
Schedule for the day:
10:00 – arrival
10:30 – 12:30 – Dynamic vinyasa flow with Ann Pidcock. Focused on nourishing the whole of our being through the structure of the Maya Koshas. Expect light yoga philosophy weaved into a fun 2 hours of creative flow.
12:30 – 14:00 – Vegan Lunch
14:00 – 15:30 – Xochi Balfour, aka The Naturalista, is a holistic wellness guide and Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist. About Ann and the Yoga
Ann was first introduced to Yoga whilst training as a dancer at London Contemporary Dance School.
The instant improvement she experienced in strength and flexibility made her curious to discover more about Yoga and it’s extensive uses and benefits.
For Ann one of the most exciting aspects of yoga is that it has the potential to recognise the whole of a being. She has trained specifically with this interest and tailors her teaching to embrace this holistic approach.
Ann has been teaching a soft, creative style of Vinyasa Flow across London for the past 9 years.
Her original teacher training was 500 hours BWY with Danny DeVille. She has since sought out wisdom from many wonderful teachers, adding texture and depth to this foundation.
Her interest in how the body moves is largely influenced by her work in dance, whereas the breathing, asana and esoteric elements stem from her education in Yoga and its rich history of ideas and styles.
Ann trained in restorative with Judith Hanson Lasater and is a certified 'Relax and Renew' teacher.
Believing whole heartedly that being able to access this profoundly restful state is deeply important to being healthy human beings.
It works in harmony with her more flow based teachings and fits well with embracing all necessary aspects of wellness.
Nidra translates as sleep.
This is a guided meditation which welcomes you home to your true nature. Something to be experienced rather than described!
Ann studied with Uma Dinsmore Tuli and Nirlipta Tuli and continues her studies into Richard Miller's 'iRest' method.
